Supporting various philanthropic organizations is a longstanding tradition of Sigma Kappa. Each year we plan multiple events dedicated to our five major Philanthropies: The Sigma Kappa Foundation, Inherit the Earth, Gerontology, The Maine Sea Coast Mission, and The Alzheimer’s Association.
Typically we begin the year with the local Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti Walk to End Alzheimer’s. This is a wonderful way to introduce our newest members to our chapter’s philanthropy and inspire them with the ability to march amongst people living with Alzheimer’s as well as their family members, supporters and caregivers in a united and powerful setting.
Next we have our Ultra Violet event Sigma Sliders, which is held at our Alpha Mu Chapter house and brings together our community to enjoy delicious hotdogs from Ray's Red Hot with all the fixings, play in a friendly wiffle ball tournament, and fundraise for the Sigma Kappa Foundation.
During our Week of Giving we are proud to clean up parks around the city of Ann Arbor to support Inherit the Earth, and this year we were able to participate in an event called SpringFest and provide supplies for students to plant their own Violets and bring public attention to our support for this organization.
A local Newspaper even wrote about us! https://www.michigandaily.com/section/news/greek-led-philanthropy-efforts-included-part-springfest-first-time
As an ode to our amazing founders, we collect supplies and gift cards during the holiday season to send to the Maine Seacoast Mission to provide for the immediate needs of the children and families of Maine’s Washington and Hancock Counties and off shore islands. In the future we hope to send volunteers to continue to help improve the quality of life for the residents through home repair and other projects.
Finally, one of our favorite and final events of the year is our Valentine’s Day dance with a local senior living facility. It is such a treat to dance and sing with all of the residents and share in the joy and spirit of the loving holiday.
Alpha Mu also enjoys participating in other club and Greek life-lead philanthropy and service projects to support other important organizations and our peers here at the University of Michigan. Philanthropy will always be an important part of our mission!
